DEVELOPING AUTOMATED DETECTION SYSTEMS

Ensuring the safe use of hydrogen in domestic buildings

The UK government and energy regulator Ofgem have initiated projects to ensure the safe use of hydrogen gas in domestic buildings.

HyBreak – The NIA project aims to develop an automated solution, to be physically tested at NeRV, to monitor home pressures, flow rates, isolate supplies in emergencies, and communicate with customers and gas networks. It covers natural gas, hydrogen, and hydrogen blends.

  • Integrating new technology for pressure/flow measurement
  • Communications
  • Integration with flammable gas detection
  • Enhancing insight and emergency response for GDNs

Working with the NeRV team, the project uses a novel approach combining agile project management and traditional methodologies, improving collaboration, learning, and agility, thus exceeding delivery targets and generating additional benefits.

All of our energy ambitions – whether on net zero, energy independence, or cost of living – require new technical roles and a body with the remit and expertise to fulfill them. These roles are needed to help plan and shape the electricity and gas systems, drive competition and innovation, and ensure government and Ofgem decisions are based on robust technical advice
