As well as research and development of new technology, NeRV can support regional energy system planning, provide evidence to support policy, and inform net zero strategy at national level, at a key time for the UK as it approaches 2050.
Transitioning to net zero is a huge priority for our national and regional leaders and faster progress is needed.
Net zero by 2050
NeRV is about accelerating fair and sustainable decarbonisation for all, not just the elements of society that can afford it.
With the UK legally bound to achieve net zero by 2050, we know there is a need for complementary material change across all networks and all households. Such a large-scale implementation requires influencing household behaviors.
Even slight changes at household level when it comes to technology adoption and consumer behaviour can result in a significant impact on energy suppliers and network operators when aggregated.
When you consider that the UK has to retrofit 25 million homes, this is not an easy challenge to meet, particularly given our broad range of housing stock, different geography, different household behaviors, different community needs – what works well in one home, won’t work in another. But customers need clarity. We know there is a need to deliver real-time data at scale, that will optimise low carbon, least cost retrofit solutions for UK households – and myth-bust one-size-fits all ‘silver bullets’, or existing preconceptions about what works best.
